Quake 4 + MS Office 2007 = Apocalypse

Ok, maybe apocalypse is a bit of an exaggeration, but putting these two together on your computer is bad news.

Maybe installing Quake 4 followed by Office 2007 will yield better results, but switch the order around and you’ll get a lovely cryptic error message that tells you there was a fatal error in the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library, that it couldn’t find a required DLL. It then gives you an equally cryptic error code, similar to R6034, and nothing more.

Who would have guessed that Office 2007 and Quake 4 are incompatible, and what convoluted programming scheme led to this disaster on ID Software’s part.

I, as a developer myself, cannot even begin to wonder why Quake 4 would use a DLL that is found inside the installation location of an Office package…

Just registered to post the fix for this: Rename the folder Office 12 inside the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ folder to Office 11, then start the install. When it’s done rename office 11 back to 12 so office will still work. I’m not sure how these two programs got mixed up but good luck.
